Awareness & Advocacy
Breakaway Hero

In 2025, a record 175 riders saddled up for The Breakaway Horse Riders’ annual charity ride. Now in its 24th year, this event is a wonderful part of the local Mackay calendar and this year they chose to embrace purple and support people impacted by pancreatic cancer.

This incredible group chose to support Pankind, raising over $24,000 to help fund life-changing research, awareness and advocacy.

A single story that brought people together

At the heart of this year's ride was Greg Barr, a passionate horse rider and pancreatic cancer survivor. Greg brought the group of riders together over the lunchtime break and shared his personal story.

Many riders had been affected by pancreatic cancer and Greg’s story reminded them all why awareness matters, and why coming together can make a real difference.

It wasn't just a speech. It was something we all felt. It gave us purpose.

A ride with rich history

The Breakaway Horse Ride was started 24 years ago by a local rider who still takes part every year. What began as a small ride with big heart has grown into a powerful symbol of community spirit and giving back.

This year there was a sea of purple, with riders as young as 2 years old coming together in one massive fundraising effort.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer, and is often diagnosed late. People in rural and regional areas are even less likely to be diagnosed early and awareness in these communities can be life-changing.

Making progress where it’s needed most

Funds raised by the ride will support research and programs that help Australians understand their risk, get diagnosed earlier, and feel more supported. Tools like the Family History Checker are helping people in regional areas access information that could save lives.

At Pankind, we’re working to close the gap - because everyone, no matter where they live, deserves a fair chance.

Moving forward, together

This year’s ride was more than a fundraiser. It was a reminder of the power of community and what can happen when we move forward with purpose.

To Greg and all the Breakaway Horse Riders - thank you! You energy, kindness and commitment have helped raise awareness of pancreatic cancer, helping more people know what to look for.
